
Navigators Challenge 2021
Uncover the Secrets of the River Orwell plus Treasure Hunt followed by evening BBQ
Join Mark Taylor (Hawkeye) as your tour guide for a unique journey to uncover a few of the many secrets of the beautiful River Orwell and search for hidden treasure.
Sail or motor upriver to just before the bridge, identifying and learning about important features from the river’s maritime past. Can you discover the location of Margaret Catchpoles* (a notorious east coast smuggler) hidden stash? Some simple questions will provide the key to its location.
Skippers: You will have reached Freston Port Marker buoy and turned for home (caution, the channel is narrow here) by 1330 Hrs.
Navigators: Locate the various features and answer some simple questions using the navigational buoys for pilotage.
Round off the evening with a BBQ expertly cooked by Kevin and Stuart.

Distance: 7.5 NM x 2 = 15 NM. Harwich: LW 0850 HW 1520 (BST) Ipswich: LW 0900 HW 1540
Cast off around 1000-1100 (slow boats aim to be towards the front) You should have turned for home by 1330
Tie up around 1530-1630
BBQ from 1730 onwards

Have a pair of binoculars handy. To locate the treasure you can use charts of the River Orwell (1:25 000 from the Orwell Bridge down past the Felixstowe docks would be ideal) or, if you don’t have a chart you might use a chartplotter to find its location
